Actionable Tips for Reducing Waste in Daily Life

Brought to you by IBEC Intelligence

When your organization pursues R2 Certification, you show your commitment to sustainable practices, and you are really playing an active role in alleviating a dire situation for the environment.

It’s important to take a holistic approach, and promote sustainable practices in everything that we do.  Unfortunately, the environmental impact of waste on the planet is drastic.  Both individuals and businesses have the power to make meaningful changes.

The amount of waste that is created daily and annually is staggering.  According to meuRESIDUO, “Annually, 2.12 billion tons of waste is produced across the world.

  • Of that waste, 1.3 billion tons is made up of food. That’s over three trillion meals each year wasted, approximately one-third of all food generated for human consumption.

  • At least 33% of the planet’s waste is not managed in an environmentally safe way. That’s only a conservative figure, which means the percentage could ultimately be even more frightening.

  • The average daily waste per person averages 0.74 kilograms worldwide. However, the range for this can vary drastically depending on location. This goes from 0.11 kilograms to 4.54 kilograms.

  • By 2050, it is expected that global waste will grow to 3.40 billion. This growth is more than twice the population growth during the same time period.” [i]

  • Reducing waste not only benefits the planet but can also lead to cost savings and a more sustainable lifestyle. Here are some actionable tips to help you reduce waste in your daily life.

For Businesses

  1. Conduct a Waste Audit – Start by assessing the types and amounts of waste your business generates. A waste audit can help identify areas for improvement and inform strategies for reduction.

  2. Implement a Recycling Program – Set up a comprehensive recycling program that includes clearly labeled bins for different types of recyclables. Educate employees on proper recycling practices to ensure maximum participation.

  3. Reduce Packaging Waste – Work with suppliers to minimize packaging materials. Consider bulk purchasing and encourage the use of reusable containers. If packaging is necessary, opt for biodegradable or recyclable materials.

  4. Encourage Digital Communication – Minimize paper waste by promoting digital communication tools. Use email, messaging platforms, and project management software to reduce the reliance on printed documents.

  5. Foster a Culture of Sustainability – Engage employees in sustainability initiatives by encouraging them to share ideas and participate in waste reduction programs. Consider organizing workshops or challenges to promote awareness and action within the workplace.

  6. Work with R2 Certified Vendors and Evaluate Your Supply Chain – Ensure that your organization has a solid understanding of the supply chain and vendors.  You want to collaborate with those that are R2 Certified and promote environmentally sound practices.  Also, as you upgrade your electronic and IT equipment, make sure to collaborate with R2 Certified organizations for effective disposal.

For Individuals

  1. Embrace Reusable Products – Switching to reusable items can significantly cut down on single-use plastics. Consider investing in:

    • Reusable shopping bags for groceries.

    • Stainless steel or glass water bottles to avoid plastic bottles.

    • Cloth napkins and food wraps instead of paper products.

  2. Practice Minimalism – Evaluate your possessions and consider adopting a minimalist approach. This means decluttering and keeping only what you truly need and love. Donate or recycle items you no longer use, which helps reduce waste and supports others.

  3. Compost Organic Waste – Composting is an excellent way to reduce food waste. Set up a compost bin in your kitchen or yard for organic scraps like fruit peels, vegetable trimmings, and coffee grounds. Compost enriches soil and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills.

  4. Plan Meals Wisely – Meal planning can help minimize food waste. By creating a shopping list based on your planned meals, you can avoid buying excess food that might go uneaten. Additionally, be creative with leftovers to turn them into new meals.

  5. Go Digital – Reduce paper waste by opting for digital alternatives. Use e-bills, online banking, and digital note-taking apps to minimize printed materials. When you do need to print, use both sides of the paper.

Every single one of us can do our part in helping the environment.  Reducing waste is a collective effort that requires commitment from both individuals and businesses. By implementing these actionable tips, you can contribute to a more sustainable future and inspire others to follow suit. Every small change adds up, making a significant impact on the environment and fostering a culture of sustainability. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener planet for future generations.
