When organizations decide to become R2 (Responsible Recycling) Certified, they are making a major declaration that they want to uphold the highest standards for environmental and public health protection.  R2 Certification mandates are primarily focused on promoting responsible practices in the recycling of electronic waste (e-waste), aiming to protect both the environment and public health. The R2 certification standard was developed by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) and is globally recognized as a benchmark for responsible electronics recycling.

These key mandates typically included in R2 certification help with environmental and public health protection:

Environmental Compliance: Certified facilities must comply with all relevant environmental laws and regulations regarding the handling, storage, and disposal of electronic waste. This includes adhering to requirements related to hazardous waste management, air and water quality standards, and other environmental protections.

Worker Health and Safety: R2 certified facilities must prioritize the health and safety of their workers. This includes providing appropriate training, protective equipment, and ensuring that workers are not exposed to hazardous materials or unsafe working conditions.

Data Security: Certified facilities must have processes in place to ensure the secure handling and destruction of data-containing devices. This includes data wiping or destruction methods that meet industry standards and protect against unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Responsible Recycling Practices: R2 certification mandates responsible recycling practices, including the proper disassembly, sorting, and recycling of electronic components and materials. Facilities must have documented procedures for managing e-waste throughout its lifecycle, from collection to final disposition.

Chain of Custody: Certified facilities must maintain a documented chain of custody for all electronic waste they handle. This includes tracking the movement of materials from collection through processing and final disposition, to ensure accountability and transparency.

Continuous Improvement: R2 certification requires facilities to continuously monitor and improve their environmental and social performance. This includes regular audits, performance metrics tracking, and implementing corrective actions to address any identified non-conformities or areas for improvement.

By adhering to these mandates, R2 certified facilities demonstrate their commitment to responsible recycling practices, environmental protection, and public health preservation in the management of electronic waste.
